How to migrate from Joomla 1.0 to 1.5

In this article we will review all steps you need in order to migrate content from Joomla! 1.0.x to Joomla! 1.5. Let’s get started!

Before we go

Here is something you need to know before we start. By default the Migrator Component used in this guide is capable to migrate following:

  • Global configuration settings
  • Menus
  • Users
  • Sections, categories, content items
  • Core components such as Banner, Poll, News Feed, Weblinks, etc.
  • Core modules and related menu configuration
  • Core mambots
  • Messages

If you are using 3rd extension on your website, it’s data will not be migrated automatically. You need to contact your extension’s provider and request Migrator plugin for that extension.

Migration steps

Step 1: Preparation

Upload Joomla! 1.5 installation files on your server and set writable permission to 2 folders:

  • /tmp
  • /installation/sql/migration

You do NOT need to install Joomla! 1.5 right away. This must be done in the right step later.

Step 2: Download Migrator Component

The main tool used in migration procedure is the standard Joomla! 1.0.x component called Migrator Component. It is available for free download from Joomla code site

You need to download the latest Migrator Component ”migrator_rc5.zip

Step 3: Install Migrator Component to current Joomla! 1.0.x website

When Migrator Component is downloaded, you need to install it on your current website as regular Joomla component.

Step 4: Create Migration SQL File

Step 6: Install Joomla! 1.5

This is the most important step. Now you are ready to install your new Joomla! 1.5 CMS. We assume that you are familiar with the Joomla! 1.5 installation process and will not cover details here. If you don’t, we strongly recommend you to read very comprehensive official Joomla! 1.5 Installation Manual.

When the Joomla! 1.5 installation came up to the point “6: Configuration” you need to do following:
