How to migrate from Joomla 1.0 to 1.5
In this article we will review all steps you need in order to migrate content from Joomla! 1.0.x to Joomla! 1.5. Let’s get started!
Before we go
Here is something you need to know before we start. By default the Migrator Component used in this guide is capable to migrate following:
- Global configuration settings
- Menus
- Users
- Sections, categories, content items
- Core components such as Banner, Poll, News Feed, Weblinks, etc.
- Core modules and related menu configuration
- Core mambots
- Messages
If you are using 3rd extension on your website, it’s data will not be migrated automatically. You need to contact your extension’s provider and request Migrator plugin for that extension.
Migration steps
Step 1: Preparation
Upload Joomla! 1.5 installation files on your server and set writable permission to 2 folders:
- /tmp
- /installation/sql/migration
You do NOT need to install Joomla! 1.5 right away. This must be done in the right step later.
Step 2: Download Migrator Component
The main tool used in migration procedure is the standard Joomla! 1.0.x component called Migrator Component. It is available for free download from Joomla code site
You need to download the latest Migrator Component ”migrator_rc5.zip”
Step 3: Install Migrator Component to current Joomla! 1.0.x website
When Migrator Component is downloaded, you need to install it on your current website as regular Joomla component.
- Go to “Installers” -> “Components”
- Click “Browse” button and select the Migrator Component installation file you downloaded in previous step
- Click “Upload File & Install”
Step 4: Create Migration SQL File
When Migrator Component is installed, you need to create Migration SQL File. You will need this file in later step when installing your new Joomla! 1.5. This file is regular SQL file with instruction for database modification.
- Go to “Components” -> “Migrator”
- Once you are in Migrator Component main page, click the link “Create Migration SQL File”
Step 5: Download Migration SQL File
Once the Migration SQL file is created you need to download it by clicking link “Download”.
After this you will be redirected to Migrator SQL file listing page where you can download your newly created file. Click “Download” again. In our example the Migration SQL file has name “dev10_20070920_003930.sql”
Step 6: Install Joomla! 1.5
This is the most important step. Now you are ready to install your new Joomla! 1.5 CMS. We assume that you are familiar with the Joomla! 1.5 installation process and will not cover details here. If you don’t, we strongly recommend you to read very comprehensive official Joomla! 1.5 Installation Manual.
When the Joomla! 1.5 installation came up to the point “6: Configuration” you need to do following:
- Select “Load Migration Script”
- Setup Migration SQL file parameters.
- In the field “Old Table Prefix” input the prefix you used when installed your current Joomla 1.0.x website.
Usually this parameter is “_jos”, but if you want to make sure, you can go to “Site” -> “Global Configuration” -> tab “Database” and see parameter “MySQL Database Prefix”. See the image bellow.
Current database prefix - In the field “Old Site Encoding” you choose your current site encoding.
Usually this parameter is “iso-8859-1”, but if you want to make sure, you can go to “Site” -> “Language Manager” -> “Site Languages”, select language your site is currently using and find the parameter “_ISO” in language file. See the image bellow.
Current site language encoding
- In the field “Old Table Prefix” input the prefix you used when installed your current Joomla 1.0.x website.
- Execute Migration SQL file.
- In the field “Migration Script” click button “Browse” and select the Migration SQL File you created and downloaded in step 4.
- Check the box near “This script is a Joomla! 1.0 migration script”
- Finally hit the button “Upload and Execute”
If everything is ok you will see the message about successful migration.
Now installer will move you to the final point of the installation process and you are done.
Conclusion
Joomla core team tried hard to make the migration process really painless and smooth. We have tried exactly steps in this guide and could get our sites migrated and properly worked. We wish you can do the same with your sites too. Good luck!
