How to show POUND symbol instead of GBP

here is how to do it, In the Store -> Edit Store, in the Currency Display Style section, enter £ in the Currency symbol. We have developed a site in joomla 1.5.x version where we use pound sign. we found it ok first time we visit. When we back this page again then found some extra character with it.

Please help us.
